5Rhythms is a dynamic dance movement practice created and cultivated over 40 years by Gabrielle Roth (1941-2012) and now practiced all over the world.

Tom Truman facilitates this weekly drop-in dance class, which is open for all. With no steps to learn, or particular choreography, Tom guides the class to move with awareness and tune into the body’s sensations. We dance to the 5Rhythms structure as a way of tuning into the body and igniting it's power as an instrument of expression. This practice is not aiming for any aesthetic or result and requires no special physical fitness or previous experience. Only an intention to step out into the moment and to give shape and movement to life flowing through us! Using the dance floor as a space to move into investigation of the body's natural rhythms, discovering it's deep wisdom and giving expression to our uncensored self, natural and uninhibited in the fullness of being alive.

Inner Rhythm

Thursdays 8:00pm - 10:00pm
$12 - $15 sliding scale
Ages 14 and up

Inner Rhythm is an exploration of our inner landscape–alone and in community. What is it like to be in an environment that welcomes our inner chaos and ungroundedness? What is it like to be firmly rooted in your own center, true to yourself, while sharing space and interacting with others on the dance floor? What unfolds when you carry this embodied truth and freedom beyond the dance floor, and into your daily life?

Inner Rhythm is a DJ’d, lightly facilitated, free-form ecstatic dance/movement meditation experience. It is a practice of surrendering to the moment and to your body’s wisdom. It is an opportunity for allowing, feeling, and expressing all the emotional qualities and textures that make up this human experience.

Who says gravity is limiting? Spend the afternoon with Lisa and climb, invert, dance, bounce, leap, orbit, spin, and fly like you are on the moon! When you Bungee Moon Dance, you will wear a climbing harness attached to bungees and the ceiling. The bungees give you levity and buoyancy, as if you were dancing in the lower gravity of the moon. The endless possibilities allow you to move solo or in contact improvisation. Depending on students’ interests, the time is divided between aerial dance on fabric and hammocks. This will develop core strength and awareness of moving in the air.

A dynamic exploration and celebration of the body’s intelligent composition, this practice cultivates conscious sensitivity, accessing corporeal wisdom, and developing a multi-dimensional, tangible awareness through which to know ourselves and the worlds we inhabit. Engaging with physical principles and always returning to the primacy of the breath, we work with tools such as repetition, improvisation, and developmental phrase work to develop somatic self-knowledge.

Contact Improv Jam

Tuesdays 7:30pm - 10:00pm
$12 - $15 sliding scale
Beginners and all levels welcome!

Contact improvisation (CI) is a creative dance form emerging from physical contact between partners. The Contact Jam offers a space for participants to move in tandem with one another through a Contact Improv lens. The practice transcends the boundaries between gymnastics, martial arts, meditation, and dance. In doing contact, dancers and their partners directly experience the dynamic physical forces that affect all movement: mass, momentum, inertia, and friction. The multidimensional nature—physical, emotional, and spiritual—of the point of contact allows the dancers to engage in nonverbal communication in a concrete manner, and on several levels. A monthly schedule of warm-up facilitators, soundscape artists, or theme exploration to be posted at the beginning of each month.

Welcome to movers with contact improv experience

This lab intends to find meaningful intersections of inquiry that relate to growth, enjoyment, passion, community, and discovery. This will be a peer-to-peer exchange and shared practice where we will play with the concepts, techniques, and scores that YOU want to explore.

What is a movement lab?

This container offers the same space for connection as a contact jam but with a focus on intention and research/discovery. Often there is a larger verbal component and the processes of participation, instruction, and learning are co-collaborative instead of hierarchical.

Dancers with improvisation experience are welcome to join us as we explore structures that lead to embodied present-time movement, freedom of expression and dynamic compositions. Participants are encouraged to clarify and expand sources of creative expression. Although it may sound counter-intuitive, the more structure we have, the more freedom we have to create. The Art of Improvisation sessions are facilitated by several experienced members of the group.
