5Rhythms is a dynamic dance movement practice created and cultivated over 40 years by Gabrielle Roth (1941-2012) and now practiced all over the world.

Tom Truman facilitates this weekly drop-in dance class, which is open for all. With no steps to learn, or particular choreography, Tom guides the class to move with awareness and tune into the body’s sensations. We dance to the 5Rhythms structure as a way of tuning into the body and igniting it's power as an instrument of expression. This practice is not aiming for any aesthetic or result and requires no special physical fitness or previous experience. Only an intention to step out into the moment and to give shape and movement to life flowing through us! Using the dance floor as a space to move into investigation of the body's natural rhythms, discovering it's deep wisdom and giving expression to our uncensored self, natural and uninhibited in the fullness of being alive.

The 5Ryhthms is a practice of being in our body that invites aliveness and awareness, inspires creativity, nurtures connection and cultivates community. Explore the dynamics in relating, in play and sharing. It’s also a space to enjoy the freedom and the simple pleasure of dancing!

Inner Rhythm

$12 - $15 sliding scale
Ages 14 and up

_DSC8633

Inner Rhythm is an exploration of our inner landscape–alone and in community. What is it like to be in an environment that welcomes our inner chaos and ungroundedness? What is it like to be firmly rooted in your own center, true to yourself, while sharing space and interacting with others on the dance floor? What unfolds when you carry this embodied truth and freedom beyond the dance floor, and into your daily life?

Inner Rhythm is a DJ’d, lightly facilitated, free-form ecstatic dance/movement meditation experience. It is a practice of surrendering to the moment and to your body’s wisdom. It is an opportunity for allowing, feeling, and expressing all the emotional qualities and textures that make up this human experience.

This is a 90 minute dimly lit dance-out set to a playlist. First half hour is a revolving playlist made by participants, last hour designed by Nadine. The intention is to offer a space where you can do your own thing in a safe container, lights off so inhibitions can be lowered, and just play. Great for the less social dancer/mover, for the trained dancer that needs some studio space to play, and for everyone who needs to shake out the stresses of life the way dance does like no other.

Who says gravity is limiting? Spend the afternoon with Lisa and climb, invert, dance, bounce, leap, orbit, spin, and fly like you are on the moon! When you Bungee Moon Dance, you will wear a climbing harness attached to bungees and the ceiling. The bungees give you levity and buoyancy, as if you were dancing in the lower gravity of the moon. The endless possibilities allow you to move solo or in contact improvisation. Depending on students’ interests, the time is divided between aerial dance on fabric and hammocks. This will develop core strength and awareness of moving in the air.

Contact improvisation (CI) is a creative dance form emerging from physical contact between partners. The Contact Jam offers a space for participants to move in tandem with one another through a Contact Improv lens. The practice transcends the boundaries between gymnastics, martial arts, meditation, and dance. In doing contact, dancers and their partners directly experience the dynamic physical forces that affect all movement: mass, momentum, inertia, and friction. The multidimensional nature—physical, emotional, and spiritual—of the point of contact allows the dancers to engage in nonverbal communication in a concrete manner, and on several levels. A monthly schedule of warm-up facilitators, soundscape artists, or theme exploration to be posted at the beginning of each month.

Derived from studies in classical modern dance, yoga asanas, butoh, breathwork, meditation, and improvisational-dance based practices, this is a two hour sensory experience that begins with a led warm-up of exercises transitions into a one hour moving meditation set to live and electronic music. The intention set through the exercises offers personal exploration and recognition of the community presence in the room, the music that supports and inspires the dance, and the space designed for safely transitioning to the dance-self. The exercises take us on a physical and creative journey through story and expression, helping us gain more physical, mental and emotional awareness, developing a deeper sense of self through movement play, supporting our presence in daily life.
